What is the suicide rate that is directly related to tinnitus? (ringing in the ears)?

I’ve had tinnitus for two and a half years and have thought of suicide many times. I’m 51 and can’t bear the thought of living with this demon much longer. It’s a constant sound of a tea-kettle on boil 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It keeps me awake at night and grumpy when I’m awake.

Tinnitus is often a symptom of long standing severe depression, which can unfortunately sometime result in suicide. Although tinnitus can make depression worse, it never results on its own in suicide. There are studies supporting this. Many people feel suicidal from time to time about many things (including tinnitus) but few if any, of them would actually be at risk. Most of the press reports have been sensation seeking and inaccurate .
I’d like to believe this, but when I have been suicidal it has been due to Tinnitus as this has caused the depression in the first place and drastically changed my life, causing a loss of will to live. Not depression at the world….depression at my new condition, so in a way, it is a direct link to Tinnitus.
Has anyone else felt suicidal because of their tinnitus? How do you cope if you have no-one near that understands your predicament? What coping mechanisms do you employ?
I thought I wouldn’t last, but I started to live a more healthy lifestyle and take up fitness, eat better and try and throw myself into certain things in life more. I find it can help give you more reasons to carry on. Good luck.
I have tinnitus. and what helped me was having a fan going on my room for background noise. Tinnitus can be cured..and I have not had my ears ring for a long time now. I suggest going to a doctor if you have not already or do some research online.
To the poster above me – there is no cure for tinnitus – NONE. If you had a ringing in your ears and it went away it was not tinnitus you had.
Sadly, it is a medical condition which is damage to the ear and as I said there is no cure.
There are things that can mask it to a degree – but at this point in time, there is nothing that can eradicate it
Prayer and meditation is a great tool.suicide is an option I don’t encourage
Amazingly, this is one disorder that in retrospect should be least troublesome as it has something as mundane & sublime as ringing ears as its symptom. But ask anybody who has a constant 24/7, 365 days a year ringing in the ears, how its like and you get an answer similar to what you have written.
You should consider relaxation techniques to conquer anxiety due to tinnitus. As tinnitus could be quite suffering, you need to first of all calm yourself to carry on with your normal, day to day life. A lot of biofeedback techniques and other therapies are on offer but yoga may help you a lot more.
Utilize masking noise. Tinnitus is usually more bothersome when the surroundings are quiet, especially when you are in bed. A competing sound such as a ticking clock, a radio, a fan or white noise machine may help mask tinnitus. Small hearing aid like devices which generate a competitive sound may help reduce the awareness of the tinnitus. You may combine such maskers along with herbal & homeopathic remedies.
Since last many years, the onus has been on the herbal industry to provide relief, if any, to tinnitus sufferers.
Tinnitus is usually due to damage to the microscopic ends of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Perfect hearing is possible only if these nerves remain healthy and any damage to these nerves results in tinnitus or hearing impairment.
Some herbal remedies exist which can be used to support all body systems involved in helping the ear to perform its tasks of clear hearing and balance, as well as the circulatory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.
Some of the most common herbs & biochemic tissue salts used are
• Ginkgo Biloba is excellent for a number of cerebral and circulatory disorders. It is probably the most widely-used herb for tinnitus and many sufferers swear by this natural ingredient.
• Rosemary dilates and strengthens blood vessels and is an excellent circulation tonic. Rosemary is particularly useful for tinnitus that is caused or worsened by high blood pressure and other circulatory conditions.
• Avena Sativa is effective in reducing high cholesterol levels which can contribute to circulatory problems which cause tinnitus.
• Wild Hyssop s also useful in reducing pain and inflammation.
• Salicylic Ac. (30C) is indicated for tinnitus with loud roaring or ringing sounds, which may be accompanied by deafness or vertigo. This remedy is particularly useful in people whose symptoms began with a bout of flu, Meniere’s disease or long-term use of aspirin.
• Ferrum phosphoricum (Ferrum phos. D6) is a homeopathic biochemic tissue salt which supports the absorption of iron in the body. The protective myelin sheath which surrounds all nerve tissue needs iron to supply this vital nutrient to the nerve cells it encases. Regular use of Ferrum phos. can help to prevent dizziness, headaches and restlessness and is of great benefit for those who tend to feel irritable, tense and tired.
• Magnesium phosphate (Mag. phos. D6) well-known as a homeopathic painkiller, Mag. phos. is also of great benefit to the health of the nerves. It acts as a natural anti-spasmodic and a nerve and muscle relaxant and is also frequently recommended for stress headaches.
Hope all this helps
Good Luck!
