What causes it? And before anyone suggests it, no I’m not suffering from tinnitus
Thanks!
edit: Yes I know exactly what tinnitus is and I don’t have it. Try staying in a quiet room or wear those noise canceling headphones/devices and listen carefully.
slishou: Tinnitus is a medical symptom that may be caused by the reasons you have stated. However, tinnitus is present (whether slight or severe) almost if not all the time. My question was: do you notice a ringing sound in complete silence, meaning devoid of any ambient sounds.

I’m a constant Ipod user and this question has had me worried. I am fully aware that excessive volume can cause tinnitus but what about just listening to it at normal volume? I use my Ipod while doing everything from homework, to walking back home, to even reading a book. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I have had tinnitus for about 10 years. Its not too bad – it doesn’t stop me sleeping anymore – but I still wouldn’t mind getting rid of it.
It started when I was about 12 a couple of days after my doctor gave me this nasal spray to clear my nose. I have always associated this spray with the start of the tinnitus which is why I am reluctant to see a doctor in case they make it worse.
I have done a little bit of research on the internet and the information about tinnitus is confusing, with some people saying you can cure it (at least some kinds) and most people saying it can’t be cured at all.
I’m pretty sure that my tinnitus isn’t caused by loud music etc but apart from that I’m not sure. I did always have problems with my ears mainly from mucous (hence the nasal spray).
I hope someone out there can help – thanks in advance.
*no real ear infections, but my ears sometimes get bunged up when I have a cold.

Tinnitus is ringing in the ear.
My b/f snores so loud, I can’t sleep, even with earplugs. Recently I hear high pitches sometimes in ear or swooshing sound but hearing in general seems fine.
B/f went to dr. and he just told b/f lose weight. Co-pays cost too much to just keep going back.
I know some of you worry about sleep apnea, in general he doesn’t seem to stop breathing or have sleepiness during the day. Only once he woke up gasping for air like he forgot to breathe.
The question is, sleeping next to him, can Iose hearing? It’s so loud, that he can be heard downstairs. Sometimes he’ll let out this enormous snore that even wakes him.
Uggghhh, going crazy!!!

I know about tinnitus (I don’t know if that’s how you spell it) but I was also wondering if not getting enough vitamins could also cause ringing ears. I was told it could, but I want more opinions. Any information would be much appreciated.

Would Nortriptyline do a better job than Amitriptyline?
I know it was developed as an anti depressant but has "off label" uses. I’m taking one 10mg tablet a day – lowest dose possible. It’s supposed to help neurological pain (I think) and tinnitus but don’t have a clue how it’s supposed to work. Been taking it for a week and don’t notice a difference, guess it’s too early to tell if it’ll help but my hunch is it won’t do much good until such time as the TMJ is dealt with (probably the actual cause of the tinnitus) Also on Ponstan (Ponstal in the US) 50mg three times a day for pain relief, it’s Mefenamic acid. Thanks.

Had slight ringing in right ear. Went to Ear Nose and Throat Doctor. Did tests. Passed all, everything was ok, hearing, no fluid, no wax, and the tiny hairs were not damaged.
Trying to find the cause of the tinnitus. Not taking any medications. Have narrowed it down to a couple things though….
-6 months ago I dove into shallow beach, hit head on sand…no concussion
-My girlfriend said I grind my teeth at night, I had my overbite corrected, and now have slight TMJ
-7 months ago I shot a loud rifle with no ear protection
I just noticed the tinnitus a month ago though….any help is much appreciated and will do best answer and 5 stars for good advice…
